Remits to General Council

42nd General Council

REMITS

At the direction of Nora Sanders,
General Secretary, General Council The United Church of Canada, presbyteries and pastoral charges are asked to vote on a number of remits approved at last summer’s 42nd General Council.

Kootenay Presbytery’s Planning and Visioning (PVT) Ministry Team will be working with presbytery reps and pastoral charges to ensure there is a process for due consideration of these remits and ensure Kootenay Presbytery and its pastoral charges will submit their vote. As explained in the letters and other background information linked here, if a presbytery or pastoral charge does not vote, that is considered a vote AGAINST the remit question.

RESULTS OF REMITS

Remit 5: Ministry Partners within Mutual Recognition of Ministry Agreements
Remit 7: Candidacy Pathway
Remit 8: A Step Towards a New Model of Membership

At our Fall Presbytery Gathering in Fernie, we took time to review and vote on some of these remits:

Keith Simmonds, President of BC Conference,
provided theological reflections and insight on the General Council Remits.
Keith is familiar to many in Kootenay Presbytery
as a former minister for Communities in Faith Pastoral Charge.
Following Keith’s presentation, small group discussions about the remits that were specifically for Presbytery to vote on were held. When the court resumed these remits were overwhelmingly passed by the court.

Remit 5: Ministry Partners
Remit 7: Candidacy Pathway
Remit 8: A Step Towards a New Model of Membership

(votes were to be received by 17 February 2017)
Additionally Remit 2: Elimination of Transfer and Settlement
was also passed by the court.

On April 2, 2017 at the Spring Gathering of Kootenay Presbytery, the court voted “YES” for
Remit 1: Three Council Model and
Remit 3: Office of Vocation,

but voted “NO” for Remit 4: Funding a New Model.
Pastoral Charges are reminded of the deadline to submit their results:

Remits 1, 2, 3, and 4 votes must be received by 30 June 2017

The vote on Remit 6: One Order of Ministry will be left for a future date
as its vote is not due until February 28, 2018.
